    About GEM OF THE OCEAN
(Information about "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" will be posted in August.)

"The play is set in 1904, the Hill District, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the parlor of Eli, Aunt Ester and Black
Mary's home at 1839 Wylie Avenue."  Aunt Ester, the drama's 285 year old matriarch, welcomes into her
home Solly Two Kings, who was born into slavery and scouted for the Union, and Citizen Barlow, a young
man from Alabama searching for a new life.

DESCRIPTION OF ROLES    (all African American except for Selig who is white)

ELI, Aunt Ester's gatekeeper and longtime friend of Solly.

CITIZEN BARLOW, a young man from Alabama who is in spiritual turmoil.  Late twenties/early thirties.

AUNT ESTER TYLER, a very old, yet vital spiritual advisor for the community.

BLACK MARY, Aunt Ester's protege and housekeeper.  Late twenties.

RUTHERFORD SELIG, a traveling peddler who is a frequent visitor of the house.

SOLLY TWO KINGS, suitor to Aunt Ester, former underground Raiulroad conductor.  Sixty-seven.

CAESAR WILKS, Black Mary's brother and local constable.  About fifty-two.

    DOUBLE CASTING OPPORTUNITIES
Some roles may be double cast in which case performance opportunities will be divided equally.

    UNDERSTUDY OPPORTUNITIES
Understudies are an important part of the maintenance of high standards and the assurance of growth at
MET.  In many ways they represent the future of the company.  Understudies work on stage at all blocking
and books off rehearsals and at as many other rehearsals as possible. Capable understudies are
guaranteed one or two performances in each of the roles covered.  The pay scale for understudies is the
same as for principals.  Understudies who perform may omit reference to understudy status on their
resumes and MET will back up the claim if asked.  Understudies are sometimes also cast in smaller roles or
serve on rehearsal staff or both.

REHEARSAL STAFF OPPORTUNITIES       Director Training Internships

One Stage Manager (director's assistant):    Attend all rehearsals and performances.
Two Assistant Stage Managers (book holder and props):   Attend half of all rehearsals and performances.

LEVEL OF PAY AND OTHER COMPENSATION
MET is a non-equity company, but all actors and rehearsal staff including understudies receive a
transportation allowance and a small share of box-office income.  More important is the opportunity to work
on a strong show and support MET's mission of creative inclusiveness. In addition, MET  provides (free of
charge) the following valuable services:  A head shot photo session and a resume creation or update.
Actors, understudies and rehearsal staff  become members of the company and as alumni receive
continuing deep discounts on group training, private coaching, and admissions to shows by MET and other
companies producing at The Next Stage in San Francisco.
For "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"  MET's color-creative, multi ethnic casting policy will be followed.
All adult singers will be encouraged to audition.  Cross-gender possibilities will be considered in casting.
